Buzz about the Bees, 20th May

These days Slovenia is buzzing with events and preparations for the first World Bee Day. Why is this day so important to us? The country is a nation of beekeepers and we want to keep our own Carniola honey bee safe. That’s why Slovenia proposed to United Nation to proclaim 20th May as Wold Bee Day to raise awareness of the importance of bees and beekeeping.

Why did we choose the 20th May? The day was chosen because the month of May is when the hive products are harvested and the season and honey-based production begin. This is also the birth date of Anton Janša, a Slovenian beekeeper and the pioneer of modern beekeeping.

As we want You to join in the activities let us take on a bee journey around Slovenia.

Slovenia is genuine beekeeping nation, as more than 10.000 inhabitants, i.e. one in 200, are engaged in this activity. Almost in all parts of Slovenia you can meet a local beekeeper who will tell you their story about the bees and their importance in our lives. You will be able to taste the glossy golden honey as well as other products from pollen to honey liquor and even “honey wine”.

You will also learn about the colourful beehive panels, typical for Slovenian beehives. Discover their history and meaning. If you feel artistic you can also paint beehive panel yourself and take it home as a lovely souvenir. Of course, you cannot miss the largest exhibition of traditional painted beehive panels in the Apicultural Museum in Radovljica.

We all know that honey is nature’s medicine so would you have a go also at apitherapy? Studies have shown that breathing air from bee hives as well as bees’ buzzing is beneficial for our well-being. Take a moment and step into the room surrounded by bee hives for a moment of peace and serenity.

If you want to be more active, hop on a bike and join the bee themed teambuilding around Bled. Cycle the “bee path”, visit a local beekeeper and the museum with various honey/bee themed games. The path would not be completed without honey tasting.

Join us in the sweet celebration throughout the whole year!
