Best way to finish a long hot summer day will probably involve chilled beer. The sound of rich foam filling the glass makes us even more thirsty.

Slovenia is the 6th producer of hops worldwide. Surprised? Slovenia has more than 25 breweries and among those 2 biggest breweries are Union and Laško. Though each of them has strong pride and history, both breweries are part of Heineken company since 2016.

Interesting enough, for the last couple of years, the popularity of craft beer rose significantly, it is no longer a surprise to find variety of craft beers in booze corner at regular grocery stores. There are many Slovenian craft/microbreweries and they produce excellent beers worth trying and some of highly rated ones are…

❶ Bevog

Most well-known and Slovenian owned microbrewery, however located in Austria just a few kilometres away from the border. Bevog’s goal is to transcend the limits of the known and ordinary.

Try>> Ond Smoked Porter

❷ HumanFish

HumanFish is the pioneers of the Slovenian and European craft beer movement. Why HumanFish? It’s named after the olm (amphibian) which called as human fish by Slovenian since it has skin similar to human. Located in Vrhnika (20km from Ljubljana), The brewery has its own ‘TapRoom’ to serve their creation.

Try>> Stout

❸ Pelicon

Pelicon brews beers they want to drink. Winning several international awards, this brewery seems to love what they do. Spot their distinguished black and white labels.

Try>> Quantum DIPA

If you are not a beer expert, then take a ‘craft beer tour’ in Ljubljana. You can enjoy casually with beer expert guide’s explanation and light snack paired with sorted beers. This can be organized for a private group as well.

We loved it in Ljubljana with our experience with craft beer! So nice to visit somewhere that as embraced it rather than just lager! - Bevog & Pelican we have also drunk at home (UK) since our return. I have a little travel blog which outlines our experiences in Ljubljana -https://travelwanker.world/ljubljana-slovenia-gem-place-serves-craft-beer-day-1/
